Is it true that the possessive case is only for people?
I live in Belgium although I come from the USA. I have to take an english class and my teacher says that you can't use the possessive case for animals, objects or famous people.

I think you better get another teacher, that's not correct. Possessives can be used for items, animals, ideas, and certainly famous people.
